Simple Warm Up Exercises for Senior Golfers
The effects of aging are a gradual loss of strength, endurance and, most crucial for golfers, flexibility. Your golf swing requires a certain level of strength and flexibility. If you don't have it, your swing will lack its distance, consistency and your mechanics will be very inefficient.
So, how do you improve these conditions? Well, simple golf warm up exercises do help to loosen tight muscles. This pre-game warm up exercises should take no longer than your precious 10 minutes. Just keep in mind that it is important for you to arrive early at the course for your warm up exercises. (No excuses please...)
Shoulder Rolls - Begin sitting or standing with your arms at your sides. Shrug your shoulders up. While your shoulders are in the shrugged position, slowly roll them forward and down. Repeat this up to 10 times. Then do shoulder shrugs and rolls backward, and repeat this up to 10 times.
Upper Body Twists - With your lower body staying firm twist your upper body to the left, then to the right. This is one count. Repeat this exercise up to 10 times.
Arm Circles - Stand or sit with your arms out to your sides at 90 degrees. Rotate your arms in a small forward circular motion 5 times. Repeat this in a reverse circular motion 5 times. Then, repeat the exercise 5 to 10 times.
Knee Rotations - Put your feet together, hands on knees, gently rotate knees in circle. Rotate 10 times each direction.
Wrist rotations - Raise hands to waist level and rotate them, making small circles at the wrists. Repeat 10 times each direction.
Elbow rotations - Raise hands and make circles with the forearms, pivoting on the elbows. Inhale as the hands circle up and exhale as they press down. Repeat 10 times in one direction only.
Remember to grip the club lightly and go easy on the swing. If you warm up properly you will have less chance of injuring your muscles and a much better chance of hitting longer and straighter shots.
